The unit arrived defective as the read/write "arm" clicked when accessing the hard drive. This meant most links resulted in the clicking sound. (Closing documents did not cause a clicking.) It didn't bode well for the future of the hard drive's viability.

Acer admitted the defect, but insisted I pay for returning the item for repair. Otherwise, it was their determination that the problem was Amazon's to fix. Their intransigent and dismissive attitude did not give me confidence in their support of their warranty. Acer said that the warranty period would not re-set with to the date of repair, either.

Fortunately, Amazon took a more responsive attitude. However, the return of the defective unit in the company's standardized shipping material was predicated on the replacement being received. That replacement request was supposedly made. When the time for the receipt of the replacement unit was surpassed, customer service said there was no original request to be found. It took a while for the agent (who was very patient and courteous--as are virtually all of Amazon's phone reps) to submit another request. Eventually, he communicated that the item was no longer available and there was no information on any future re-stocking. The recourse was to get a refund and try to order at a future date, or purchase a different unit. Later the same day, a search of their web site turned up the same model for $50 less. I'm supposing that the lower-priced item wasn't cross-referenced to the higher-priced item.

Amazon was quite good at setting up the refund and return information, but wasn't aware the replacement could have been ordered, albeit at a cheaper price. It was just a fluke that I did a search for it that same day.

It is with trepidation I am trying out another Acer. And, it is only because Amazon.com has such a fine response record to almost all my previous difficulties over many years doing a decent amount of business with them. They tend to be the exception to the distinctly poor customer service that is prevalent these days. Even when I can find an item cheaper elsewhere, most of the time, I use Amazon.com for the trust they have built up.

Now, let's cross our fingers the new Acer mini-laptop is not defective, too. Get more detail about Acer Aspire One AOA150-1049 8.9-Inch Netbook (1.6 GHz Intel Atom N270 Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, XP Home, 6 Cell Battery) Black.
