We bought this as a 2nd laptop for my wife to use when my "big" laptop (a small-ish 13" Toshiba Satellite) isn't available. At first I thought the Acer would be too small and inconvenient for her to use on a daily basis. WRONG! From the day she got it, my wife hasn't put it down and has not touched my other laptop.

The Acer is fantastic as a "netbook" -- it's perfect for checking email, light web browsing, and even playing some slot machines on Bodog. It's really not good for drafting complicated documents, and I wouldn't even consider playing any kind of intense games on it. Still, it fills a much-needed niche, and it's very good considering how new the netbook line is.

After looking around a bit I decided to purchase an AspireOne to replace a larger, older laptop. The product came out of the box and started up as expected. I attempted to configure the AspireOne to work with my home wireless network. After much fiddling around, I was not successful. I've configured multiple PCs and Macs to work with the same network - the procedure is straightforward.

Multiple user communities are reporting that the AspireOne uses a new WiFi chipset and driver, and that the driver will not work with networks that do not broadcast an SSID. Practical implications - you will not be able to use your AspireOne for wireless access in many hotel, airport, airport lounge, and other access locations.

I called Acer support, and that's where the real nightmare began. Acer basically refused to support the product. The first answer from Acer boiled down to, "You don't know what you are doing" and proceded to "Not our problem." Instead of answering the question, Acer support finally just hung up. Given that Acer was unable or unwilling to provide any information, I am left with only one conclusion - the user groups are correct, Acer has a problem with the AspireOne WiFi driver, and that Acer will not acknowledge or address the issue.

There are a multiple small notebook/netbook products out there. The Acer is a decent package. However, unless you are very confident that you will NEVER have a question or problem with the product, you should consider buying a different brand. Exactly as advertised. Right-left keypad buttoms are as stated and take getting used to compared to top bottom. Touch pad is sensitive, if not too much so. Using a USB mini-mouse works wonders for useability, even when seated on a plane or couch. I did do the full memory upgrade which is a little tricky, and takes you off warranty, but it really did speed things up. Acer should really make this standard since 500K of the standard 1MB gets dedicated to video and cache. This laptop was worth every penny. Since I've had it I've used it every. Its very efficient and it actually works as good if not better than my three year old desktop. The touch pad is a bit small but the tap to click makes up for that and the well placed USB ports make it easy to use USB mice. The only problems I have with this laptop are that the speakers are a bit tinny at full blast and I find the 5 in 1 card reader difficult to use, but these can be easily overlooked when you consider what else this thing can do. I've been using my Acer Aspire One for a little over a month now, and I love it. Because I work in multiple locations, I wanted a notebook computer that would let me read and write most anywhere. As a professor, I am constantly reading journal articles and student papers. The Acer lets me do that. I can carry many documents without having to cart around a heavy bag. Plus I can comment on and edit documents, which I suspect would not be as easy to do with an ereader.

So far, the Acer runs for a satisfactory amount of time on a battery. (I bought the extra battery for about 6-7 hours of run-time per charge.) I also have had no problem connecting to wireless networks.

When I first got my Acer Aspire One, I constantly heard, "Is that real?" and "That's a laptop?!" Yes, it is a laptop. It is one of the best laptops I have ever bought.

2.2 lbs feels great whenever I'm walking around school, but I constantly feel like I'm forgetting my laptop somewhere because it is so light. Because it is so small, I can also put a textbook on the desk next to the laptop instead of on my lap. I can carry the laptop around in my hand almost like a large book! It's just so great!

There are three things that I do not like about it:
1. The touchpad is a little hard to get used to. If you're not careful, you'll be zooming in and out of your document in no time.
2. No cd-rom drive. I knew that when I bought it, but I never noticed how many programs I actually need cds for. I really need an external cd-rom or my old laptop. One of the things I DO like about not having a cd-rom drive is that the backup for the laptop is on a hidden partition in the laptop. The manual tells you how to get to it in the event the laptop crashes.
3. The word processors: Microsoft Works and Microsoft Office 2007 Trial. I used to love Microsoft Works, but now when I save in .doc format, it tells me that there is no space on the HDD, when there is. So I have to copy and paste the document into Open Office in order to save it. I also hate the trial version of Microsoft Office 2007 because it is a trial version. I think it's stupid that they wouldn't include the full version on a laptop that seems like it is designed for students. The only way I could really resolve this issue was to switch to Open Office and change the properties of my documents to only open with Open Office.

I would give the Acer Aspire One a 4.5, but it won't let me. So it gets a 4. Really a wonderfull machine, powerfull enough for common works like taking notes on meetings, making short or extense documents or having your excel files. I've been trying the microsoft onenote and are really happy to have this help and can use it all time in my laptop.

I tought that 1 mb was not enough memory but I've tried several funtions at time and it works fine. Conectivity is fine and wi-fi works properly.

It has just 3 USB ports but you can always have a USB hub.
It doesn't have cd or dvd unit but I've discovered that I don't need one all the time, but just to install programs or download my music into MP3, the solution: to have an external unit at my home desk (hey: You don't have to carry it all time)

The best: Its light weight and small size allow you to have your PC with you always! It is great to travel and have permanent internet access trough a mobile internet plan.I can carry my Acer One in my bag with my wallet and make up!

This netbook is not bad and I'm typing this review on it, but tomorrow, it goes back -- I've tried it for 2 weeks. It's reasonably fast, super light and portable.

THE GOOD: Typekeys are easy to use. It's lightweight so you can watch t.v. in bed on your side :-) Boots fast from hibernation. Seems to surf the net easily with multiple windows open though it sometimes gets hung up on Facebook (like the adding friends function).

Like all netbooks, it uses Windows XP, which in my opinion is VASTLY preferable to Windows Vista, which sucks so badly that people are going to MAC's just to avoid it. (And Windows next version will be named something different just to distance it from Vista, which is a big failure.) Windows XP will run my programs that I don't want to lose that crash and don't work on Vista.

Not to mention, the price is amazing. As a 2nd computer, you only use on-the-go, this is a good price (hard to beat) and it's workable. Because I travel most of the time, I need a better compromise of both portability and usability.

THE BAD: Battery only lasts maybe 2 hours. Other netbooks like the Samsung are up to 6 now. It's a bit too small -- I've realized that 10 or 11 inches screen are about right for being able to see most windows and not strain your eyes, and other netbooks do offer larger screens. The screen also gets a little light, like these very words as I type are very thin and have gaps. It seems to jump randomly between full-screen size of 100% to 10% (window is tiny) and other percentages. I can't figure out how or why and that's annoying.

The touch pad is a REAL DEALBREAKER FOR ME and I saw my assessment echoed in an on-line netbook comparison. The click pads are on either side of the teeny weeny touchpad and after many hours on it, I STILL don't have it down pat. There are so many netbooks with a normal touchpad, that I highly recommend going for those. For me, this is just the last straw and I'm going for a 10.2 inch netbook from Samsung instead.

We're going to buy this one or one similar in about 6 months for my 6 year old to use when we travel to do his games, watch iTunes movies and go to his favorite kid websites. Nice small size, quick to respond. Light weight very portable. Only two problems with this laptop is the position of the left and right click on either side of the touch pad, very poor design, its hard to find quickly and often press the wrong spot to click. Another problem is the key board, a bit to small, I am a good typer but make to many mistakes. The Asus 1000 with 10" screen, is 1 pound heavier and has no problems. The right click and left click are under the touch pad and the key board is 92% of a normal key board. and it is 3.2 lbs. Still light and small also comes with a wireless N. I ordered this laptop on a saturday, and it arrived on Monday, in time to set it up for our Tuesday trip. We were thrilled to be able to travel with such a light, small laptop. I ordered it in pink, and tons of people at all the hotels and airline security lines were intrigued with it. I want to make a bunch of suggestions.
1. As a reviewer said, the touchpad seemed to be quirky. However, once I READ THE INSTRUCTIONS, it turns out to be excellent and has a bunch of features I never thought about. Personally, I prefer a mouse, and I have one that I travel with.
2. I had no trouble with the wireless, on a 3 week trip thru France, at quite a few hotels.
3. I plugged it in when necessary, no problems with the battery (did not need to use the laptop on the flight.)
4. The ms office trial version is USELESS! I did not bother to install my copy of office as the Acer came with a trial version and I did not have a lot of time during the 1 day before our trip. The trial version works fine, but then, the kicker, you cannot SAVE! I had my husband do his docs in word, but then copy and paste to wordpad. (I was not able to backup this system as I thought I had an install version of TrueImage, but I didn't, and I never download anything on any pc before backing up. Therefore I didn't install open office.)
5. the screen has great resolution
6. obviously, the keyboard is tiny, but that's that.
7. Make sure you have a usb cd/dvd burner. That's a must for the long term use, altho I never did use the one I brought with us. Prior to buying one for ourselves I recommended one to a friend, and she uses the netbook with cd reader/burner all the time for getting her music into her ipod from her cd collection. Also for recovery purposes.

This little device continues to amaze me. It is running the Enterprise Edition of MS Office without any problem. Power is way beyond what I expected, XP is stable, battery life is excellent. The unit is a great value. Don't expect it to compete with a loaded tower, but it is way more than the average user needs. I've been loading CDs onto a memory stick to get around the lack of a CD drive. With a wireless keyboard and mouse and an external monitor it outperforms my main laptop. This is a great little computer. I recommend getting a hard drive (adds a little weight) and the 6 cell battery (adds a little more weight). It still weights under 3 pounds, can store vast amounts of stuff, and run over 5 hours on a charge. My old laptop had plunked away at nine novels, and it was time for an upgrade. I was worried about the size of the Acer's keyboard, though, as well as the speaker quality since I listen to music while I write. A friend who has worked at Dell for years told me the Acer was a good product and he'd heard nothing but good things about them.

With that recommendation, I paid the money for my new "toy" and went home to try it out. Yes, the keyboard is small, but I'm already adjusting quickly, with few typos. I've had more difficulty adjusting to the touchpad (my old laptop was an IBM ThinkPad with the little toggle in the middle of the keyboard); even that, however, is becoming easier to use. I rarely use the left and right click buttons now that I'm mastering the same commands done with fingertips on the pad itself, as directed in the manual.

In the past, I've switched from CD to CD to listen to music. Now, after transferring all my music files (over 80 albums) via a USB thumb drive, I have nonstop tunes available from my 8GB SD card. I prefer headphones anyway, but I've used the machine without them and had no problem in quieter settings.

The screen is bright, the speed exceptional, and the few size limitations are becoming things of the past for me. I love this lightweight but topnotch little baby. I thought I'd miss my old one for nostalgic reasons. Wrong! I hope to write at least another nine novels on this thing, and all for a great price.

The machine works great, I get all sorts of compliments about it as I'm walkin around, holding it one handed. It's incredible light-weight makes it easy to carry, the specs worried me at first, but i find it runs dreamweaver cs4 and world of warcraft [low settings] just fun, even in a raid setting.
