Sometimes my friends and family would buy these behemoth laptops with a 17 in screen and a basically a fully functional desktop CPU inside. I always thought that those kinds of machines ruined the spirit of the laptop. I have been saying for quite some time that if I get a laptop I want it to be small and extremely portable, not really powerful.
Well manufacturers have finally figured out the formula that I would like. This is a bit surprising to me because I thought I would be the only person that would want one of these, but apparently marketing and price have made these little machines more popular than I (maybe even manufacturers) could have imagined.
The Acer Aspire One falls into the netbook category of computers. Small, ultra-portable, and underpowered (when compared to a full blown desktop or laptop computer).
I did research and discovered that most of the netbooks on the market are starting to come with a similar feature set. 1.6ghz ATOM processor, 1gb ram, 160gb hard drive, Windows XP. What stood out about the Acer Aspire One was: 1. Keyboard functionality 2. 6 cell battery availability 3. PRICE!!!
I got the 6 cell version of the Aspire one because several other reviews have said that its a must have for a mere 20$ more up front. I am pretty sure that I could watch two movies on Itunes on one charge. It will definitely last a good 5 hours.
After reading reviews also about the form factor of the various Netbooks I thought that the Aspire One would be a good choice because most reviewers said that the One had a useable keyboard that was only trumped by the Samsung and Dell offerings. Both the Samsung and the Dell came less equipped than the Aspire One and at a 100$ cost increase.
Even after I settled on the Aspire One, I still had a few questions about the Netbook. Maybe this will help someone who might have the same questions.
1. Since it's a NETbook, is it only good for surfing the net? No. I use mine for most functions that a regular laptop computer would do. With the purchase of a portable DVD/CD-RW drive I have installed new software on this computer.
2. They say it is underpowered, what will it/wont it do? From what I have discovered it WILL: Surf the net, stream videos, word process, spreadsheet, email, itunes (including itunes movies), and even watch DVD's (with the aforementioned external DVD drive). Things that it WONT do well: open multiple content heavy tabs in internet explorer at the same time and heavy multi tasking (such as listening to itunes, surf the web, and word process all at the SAME TIME). I can have internet explorer open and itunes running and be typing, but just not expect to be able to switch back and forth between all three at a quick rate. Another thing that I would not recommend for this computer is editing any kind of photos or videos. It takes my 6-mega pixel pictures 10 seconds to merely rotate them using windows picture and fax viewer. This does not bother me though because I have a desktop computer to edit photos. This machine isn't for that type of work.
3. How cramped does the keyboard feel? At first the keyboard was difficult to use, but the body gets used to making smaller motions and I actually think that I could be faster on my One keyboard than a full sized keyboard because the motions are so much smaller. That being said, go somewhere that has an Aspire One keyboard, or any netbook keyboard, and try it out before you purchase one online. Some people might not like it. I don't mind it at all.
4. I know the processor is a full 1 ghz slower than most modern laptops, and apparently it's a completely different archetecture, but does it FEEL slow? ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! I don't know how they make this machine boot up so fast with a 1.6 ghz processor, but it does boot up much faster than my 2.8 ghz desktop at home. I think it's because there's less to the system (less boot drives and devices etc.) Once up and running it is snappy loading software. I was worried it would slow down after installing anti-virus, but it still runs well!
I hope that this can help answer someone's questions about this little netbook. I really like mine. I would recommend this machine to any of my friends (and have), but with the disclaimer that this machine doesn't have the full capabilities of a desktop or even full-fledged netbook. However, the Acer Aspire One captures (at least in my opinion) the true spirit of what a Laptop computer should be: small, very portable, and fun.
