Acer Aspire One AOA150-1049 8.9-Inch Netbook (1.6 GHz Intel Atom N270 Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, XP Home, 6 Cell Battery) Black Immediately

We purchased the Acer Aspire One 160GB 6-cell in mid December '08.
Accessories also ordered included a 16GB card and a reversible sleeve.

Summary: Astonishingly good value for money, and well worthy of day-to-day professional use. A few little extras (sources given) made significant improvements.
We added dual-boot Linux to the XP supplied. Really goes for nearly 6 hours!

The product arrived well packaged and in perfect condition. The construction quality is robust and the design is pleasing. Keyboard layout is standard for a netbook, with good tactile feedback from reasonably sized keys. Yes, you can type real stuff on this! The Fn key works with other keys for brightness, volume, external monitor etc. These are not the usual for many laptops but are well identified.

The 1GB RAM was shown to be more than adequate for the XP SP3 supplied. Virtual memory (swapfile) access was needed only with many simultaneous applications running. We see no need to upgrade and we certainly would not advise Vista for this machine.

The display is bright, sharp and visually pleasing -even for movies- despite a modest pixel count and driving hardware.

TWO HC-capable multi-card readers are good for storage and transfer of big files. They are fast and trouble-free.

Sound quality on external speakers is pleasing and good, but the internal speakers are necessarily small and sound it. The internal camera and mic both work well.

Windows supplied software includes basic productivity packages including a trial MS Office(expensive). Maybe save the expense with the excellent MS-compatible Open Office [...]. [...]. -And use a good updatable virus-checker! If this is for professionals, a good backup program is essential, but not included, so get one.

Linux installation was easy. We used Ubuntu 8.10. Everything worked "out of the box", except wireless. The easy fix is free [...]. See this site also re the internal mic. Our Linux installation is bilingual, English/Mandarin and works flawlessly.

There's no DVD/CD drive. It's too small! We highly recommend the "Slim" DVD from LG. It is small, robust, reads and WRITES all common media with just a single USB connection (no external power required). Cheap HC-SD cards for the AAO (16GB, $[...] from these fine Amazon folks) work complimentarily for easy on-the-road big-data access. Windows needs a DVD-CD image mounter [...] Linux does it out of the box.

We had the AAO as a toy. It isn't. It does writing, presentations, communicates, and after two full operating systems with applications in the hard disk still has mostly free space. Windows software needs unincluded (but mostly free downloadable) utilities for professional use.

We love it! (And yes, we did look at the ASUS and Dell products before choosing.)
