The Acer Aspire is a great netbook that balances value and functionality. While the platform is shared by the Asus model line, I have found the extra media card slot (which actually reads the darn Olympus propietary cards) to be a greater benifit than the slightly reduced cost the Asus offers. The 6-cell battery outfitted on the Acer is also less cumbersom than that on the Asus.
I work on computers for a living and have found the solution to the wireless problems on the current Acer model.
They are shipped with an outdated BIOS and WLAN driver. Go to acer.com to download the newest BIOS and use a program called FreeDos to flash the netbook. This fixes the Standby issues with the wireless card in Windows XP. Next install the latest chipset and wirless drivers.
This should fix the issues that seem to plauge this netbook.
