The compact notebook computers have come a long way, now these days they are cheap, reliable, and more than anything else convenient. A notebook like Acer Aspire One is an ideal travel companion and a convenient second (or third) computer to have around. The smaller than normal keyboard makes Aspire One somewhat inconvenient to work on as your primary computer, but it is easy to take it around anywhere and work on at almost any location. (I am writing this review as I am sitting in the mechanic's office waiting for my car to get fixed.)
The computer comes preloaded with Windows XP, which is the right operating system for this type of device. The Vista would probably bring it to a virtual standstill, but XP seems to be running smoothly and fairly fast. The computer boots up quickly and there isn't much of a delay when starting the applications.
The keyboard is naturally reduced in size, and this should not be a computer that you use for any extended amount of typing. If you do, you might want to pre-order a carpel-tunnel treatment in advance. However, for shorter amount of typing the keyboard works just fine: it has a really good feel to it and there is a very good tactile feedback.
The placing of the trackpad buttons on the sides of the trackpad is awkward - it makes it hard to click and drag at the same time with single hand. But it is hard to imagine how with the constraints of the size of this computer it could have been done any other way.
The size of the screen likewise makes this a device that is not suited for extensive reading of online or other digital content, but it's otherwise a very sharp and crisp display. The movie playback is wonderful - if this were not a computer it would make a great portable movie viewing device. Since the computer doesn't come with a DVD slot, the only sorts of movies that one can watch are those that have been already converted to some other more accessible digital format. In particular, the video streaming works really well, whether streaming is from another computer on the local network, or if it is done over the Internet. In particular, the playing of online Netflix content worked impeccably, even over the wireless connection.
Overall, this is a wonderful computer that can be used either as a primary or secondary device. It is made out of quality parts, and the price makes it a really high value product. I highly recommend it.
