Acer Aspire One AOA150-1049 8.9-Inch Netbook (1.6 GHz Intel Atom N270 Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, XP Home, 6 Cell Battery) Black Get it now!

This was a really cute little computer, and would have been just what I wanted...if it worked.

It booted up fine, and connected to my wireless network seamlessly. But it would not detect any USB devices I connected to it. I tried several different devices, on all three USB ports...nothing. I tried all the usual remedies, like uninstalling the USB drivers and disconnecting the battery to let the computer reset. No dice. I suspected there was a loose connection in there somewhere, but was hesitant to open up a laptop case like I would a desktop.

As a last-ditch effort, I tried the eRecovery icon on the desktop. It's supposed to reinstall Windows. The result was the blue screen of death and the computer not starting at all. It wouldn't even start in Safe Mode. I thought about trying to make a boot disk, but with no CD drive, no floppy drive, and no USB drives, I couldn't figure out how to do it. I also decided that it was too much trouble for a brand-new computer.

I am returning this piece of junk to Amazon and buying a Dell. It's more expensive and has a smaller hard drive, but I've decided I really can't afford cheap.

If you don't want to shell out for a Dell, take a look at the ASUS Eee PC 1000HA 10-Inch Netbook (1.6 GHz Intel ATOM N270 Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, XP Home, 6 Cell Battery) Fine Ebony. It's slightly larger and heavier than the Dell or the Acer, but it's priced about the same as the Acer, and has much better reviews. As of today, nothing below 3 stars, and no complaints about it being defective. While the Acer has a lot of one-star reviews, mostly because the units were defective, either DOA or very shortly afterwards.

UPDATE: I actually did order the Dell, but changed my mind and canceled it. I decided it was too big, with not enough battery life.

I wanted to get a Samsung instead, but many reviews for it complained about screen problems. Samsung admitted the problem, and promised to fix it, but who knows how long that would take.

So I got the Asus, and have been very happy. There are a couple of issues with it, but they are easy to fix. I've been using it daily for months now, and am very pleased with the purchase.

And Amazon was great about taking back the Acer and refunding my money. Get more detail about Acer Aspire One AOA150-1049 8.9-Inch Netbook (1.6 GHz Intel Atom N270 Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, XP Home, 6 Cell Battery) Black.
