I've had this labtop for about a month now and I simply love it. I purchased the pink 160 GB, 6 cell, XP version on Amazon for $399.00. However I've noticed that you can now purchase the same model for $359.00. So here is the break down: Keep in mind that mini-labtops are designed to be about half the internal power of a normal full-sized labtop. However, if you are looking for a small net surfing device that can handle e-mailing, and simple word processing, then this may be the mini-labtop for you. It's a great 2nd labtop!
PROS: small, only 2.2 pounds if you select the model with a 3 cell battery. Can get XP or Linux operating system (40 programs; I'm told that the word processing program is compatible with Word). It has a built in web cam. The screen is very bright and clear. As for the keyboard, it's small but very usable. I love the touch pad; you can actually tap the center of the touch pad to right click. You can even increase the font size using the touch pad. It's a very nice looking machine with a glossy finish with a sturdy design. I've already dropped it (not recommended LOL), but it still works.
CONS: The glossy finish is cute, but it makes this machine a finger print magnet. Screen should be a little larger (not a problem for me and I'dont have 20/20), Note: You can increase the font. Some have complained of a noisy fan, but my $1,400 labtop is much nosier. Others have complained of screen glear, but I've not had a problem. The speaker has a very low output, really hard to hear sometimes. The Aspire doesn't have bluetooth capablities. However there is a PC to PC File Transfer for Dummies cable that you can purchase (it came with my daughter's Aspire One).
THE FINAL WORD: I've compared this machine to others such as the Asus, although the Asus us cute, the touch pad is very sensitive. Of course all of the mini labtops have pros and cons, most unbais reviewers seem to favor the Aspire One. If you are seriously considering purchasing this machine, you may want to take a look at it in person. Staples sells the 120GB Linux version for $349.00 plus taxes, so go to Staples to look, not buy.
Update:
Just purchased the competition (Asus 1000HE), I love it!The Acer is still a good choice but the Asus may be a better choice for some people. So here are some things to keep in mind: The Aspire's 8.9 version doesn't display the full web page for some applications. There is a glear from the glossy screen (comapred to the mat finish-Asus). Some viedo's don't run as smoothly as it could (due to 1GB Ram). Keys are close together, Asus is spaced out just a little and it is easier to use. The Right/ left click is stiff, but I'm okay with it it now. My father has the 10 inch version, the right/left click is better, but still needs to be improved. Note: If you really want an Acer and you have a little time to wait, Acer is coming out with a 3GB netbook model, so stay tuned. There a a few other differnece, be sure to check them out before purchasing. I used a general top ten netbook search to help me with my second, wiser netbook choice. GOOD LUCK!!!
