i'll have to say, the aspire one is just what the writing doctor ordered. i realized all the writing on notepads i was filling with the great American novel were not getting transcribed into files on my computer...i just never got around to unplugging my 14" laptop from all it's wires, and taking it to the cafe to sip and write...besides, with the bag and everything, this thing was topping out at 15-20 pounds, especially since it weighed six pounds to begin with.
THAT's when i decided to find a smaller laptop. as i started looking i found a nEw category of laptop had been invented, the netbook, super small. THaT was for me.
first i checked all the reviews, and the acer one left all the others in the dust when cost was factored in. NoT regarding cost, it was still in the top three. CoST was a factor, so it would be the acer one.
i wanted windows xp, the one gig ram, and definitely the longer battery for six hours, the six cell. first i was thinking wait until after Christmas, but even just thinking about this mini computer loosened that writer's block, so i decided to go ahead and purchase.
sHAAAAZaaaaaaaaM! i couldn't believe the price on amazon. i had already purchased a ringflash for my canon on amazon, and wanted it quick, so even though amazon hadn't been the lowest price in that case, it was still a decent price. i'd been happy with that, so i trusted amazon. HoWeVeR, amazon did have the LOWest price on the acer both with or without the package i wanted, including the 1 gig, windows and the 6-cell battery. so i BouGHT!
believe it or not, after Christmas, in all the local sales, and even after New Years, i couldn't find anything lower than the price i paid on amazon, and that's by $25.
i sat for 4 hours last night at borders, sipping and using my acer, no excuse now not to write, and no need to transcribe later. i couldn't be happier with the product, oR amazon as always.
noW, for a critique of the acer one. not much to critique, except that even though 6 hours of time is bueno mucho, i'd probably like to get the 9 cell 9 hour battery...it's not offered with the package, but i think on amazon i saw one for a big savings over other places, so i might get one eventually. but, i'll say that acer has rated the battery's life honestly, and it looks to offer the full six hours, at least when i've been writing on it...can't say for websurfing...but...
when talking about websurfing, i don't even have to click on anything and when i start up, the acer let's me know what online wifi services are available and asks if i'd like to connect. like everything with this, it's a breeeeeeze to use
lastly, if there were anything to critique, it would be the screen size and keyboard. but certainly not a reason not to buy because a smaller screen size and keyboard go precisely with a mini laptop...so i knew this going in...i think some of the other netbooks offer a 1/2 inch bigger screen, which would be nice, but not with the size and weight increase their units add, plus the cost. as for the keyboard, being a former news journalist, i never could type on a laptop keyboard...that big area below the keys forced my wrists up like they never were on newsroom or desktop computers, so i've always had to take a mini usb keyboard with me when using my other laptop anywhere...NOTE, the acer aspire one being so small does not have that big fLat area below the keypad! yay, though the mouse configuraton (while not as offputting as some reviews suggested, does take a moment or two to get used to)
so when i trepeditiously wrote my first strokes on the acer keyboard, i was pleasantly surprised...the keys are very touch friendly and feel great...and while the keyboard is just a tad smaller than would be optimum, everything in this world is a tad more or less than optimum...for what this unit provides in size and weight (not to mention cost), the keyboard is about as good as it gets...again, one or two of the heavier, larger, much more expensive netbooks in the reviews had a slightly bigger keyboard, but for instance, the dell (which did) was lacking in so many other qualities, including battery life, weight and power, not even mentioning cost, i certainly don't mind having to have my fingers get used to a little tightness...it becomes quite comfie after awhile
i couldn't be more approving of this acer aspire one, and that includes getting it on amazon...
can U tell i'm happy with the purchase?
